Latest news from H2020 MERLIN – Mainstreaming freshwater Nature-based Solutions.

Merlin (Mainstreaming Ecological Restoration of freshwater-related ecosystems in a Landscape context: INnovation, upscaling and transformation) has been working with economic sectors to find out more about how to these sectors can benefit from, and help implement, Nature-based Solutions. The latest outcomes have been summarised in the Freshwater Blog (link: Can nature-based solutions help ‘green’ European economies? | The Freshwater Blog) and suggest that there are some promising pathways, but work is needed to build mutual understanding and improve the evidence base. These concepts, and others relating to how to finance mainstreaming and how to monitor restoration to support these wider perspectives, were shared with an audience of over 100 member state agencies on 10th March 2024 in Brussels. Sharing insights, experience and tools should support the Member States as they start preparing their Nature Restoration Plans, due in September 2026. Together with our Scottish partners (Forth Rivers Trust, University of Stirling and UKCEH), we are using research to support European policies and deliver international commitments on climate and biodiversity through a ‘just’ transformation process.
